It wasn’t awful, but not up to expectations either: The $11.2 million box-office debut for “Abduction,” the first headlining gig for Grand Rapids-born heartthrob Taylor Lautner, wasn’t enough to top “Moneyball,” “Dolphin Tale” or Disney’s re-release of “The Lion King.”
Box Office Mojo reports, “The audience breakdown was 68 percent female and 56 percent under the age of 25″ for “Abduction.” Boxoffice.com originally projected the film to open with a $13 million weekend and a $32 million run, which might be slightly generous in the wake of last weekend’s numbers.

This, of course, prompted comparisons to the box-office output of Lautner’s “Twilight” co-star, Robert Pattinson, who didn’t fare that well in his solo excursions, either. Interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter piece on the stars’ post-”Twilight” success (or lack thereof) states that Lautner earned roughly $5 million for “Abduction,” where earlier reports put the number at $7.5 million.
Critics savaged “Abduction” – it scored a paltry 3 percent at Rotten Tomatoes, while the site’s audience rating states 55 percent of moviegoers liked it.

The overall weekend box office report is an odd one: it marks the best September weekend on record, led by a movie that’s 20 years old. “The Lion King”‘s 3-D re-release topped the charts for the second week in a row; it has now grossed a cumulative $61.6 million.

In other Lautner news, if you care about this kind of thing, Lautner’s romance with “Abduction” co-star Lily Collins has apparently fizzled out. But the romance between audiences and the “Twilght” franchise is expected to generate more box office heat – it’s expected to earn $155 million its opening weekend.

We just got off the phone with Taylor Lautner like, eight seconds ago, and our hearts are still pounding (Team Jacob!) and our cheeks are still embarrassingly red. Ugh, the things we do for you guys. It was hard work chatting with Tay about his new flick Abduction, why “ladies like dudes on a motorcycle” and Beliebers vs. Twihards (Yes, we went there.), but someone’s gotta do it, right?!

Teen.com: In the movie’s opening scene, you’re riding on the hood of a moving car! Are you spontaneous like that in real life, too?
I’m definitely, definitely very spontaneous. Definitely like, you know, pushing the edge way more than I should. It’s fair to say I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. So when I found out about that stunt, that was definitely very very top of my list of stunts that I wanted to do in this movie.

Teen.com: Your character Nathan finds out he’s not who he thinks he is via the internet. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever read about yourself online?
There were death rumors about me. There’s been a few, but there was one that was all over the place and I got phone calls and e-mails from friends and family making sure everything was okay. The funny thing about that one is that it was the craziest, most ridiculous story of how I died. It was like, I was out at some party and these exotic dancers at the party stole me and I don’t even know what they did to me, but it was the most ridiculous story and that’s by far the craziest thing I’ve read about myself.

Teen.com: Ok, we need to talk about that makeout scene. How many takes did that kissing-in-the-train scene take to get right?
Not too many because we wanted it to be organic. We didn’t want it to feel forced and choreographed so we kind of just went for it and hoped it went well.

Teen.com: Well uh, it did. Was that scene awkward for you to watch? What was your favorite scene to watch?
I loved watching the whole train sequence actually. The conversation that happens between Nathan and Karen to the romantic scene and then right after that into the brutal fight scene — that whole sequence all together is definitely my favorite to watch.

Teen.com: Nathan and Karen had this amazing, action-packed first date. What do you think Nathan would’ve planned for their second?
Probably something a little more realistic. I think its definitely time for him to bring this back down to life. Like go on a movie or take her out to dinner. Something like that.

Teen.com: What’s been your best first date ever?
I’m not so sure. Probably something similar along those lines. I like keeping it simple where I can get to know somebody.

Teen.com: Nathan has a motorcycle. Jacob has a motorcycle. Do you think that’s the ticket to getting the ladies?
(Laughs) You know, it does seem that ladies like dudes on a motorcycle. But I’m not sure. Maybe I need to be doing that because I’ve never had a motorcycle and I don’t think I will, but it definitely works for Nathan and Jacob.

Teen.com: There’s a little Bieber reference in the movie. Are you a fan?
I think he’s very talented. He and Selena came to the premiere. It was great to have them there and they definitely showed their support, which was awesome.

Teen.com: Who’s crazier — Beliebers or Twihards?
That is a very good question. I don’t know because I haven’t experienced the other one, but I will definitely stand behind our fans because I truly we think we have the most amazing fans in the world.

Teen.com: Other than the fact that you’re in the movie, why do you think Twihards will like Abduction?
Regardless if I was in or not I think they would love this movie because its fun, it’s thrilling, it’ll keep them on the edge of their seats. My personal favorite part is that you’re trying to guess what’s gonna happen in the end because there’s twists and turns and you never know what’s going on.

Teen.com: Definitely! And speaking of Twilight, we hear there’s partial nudity in Breaking Dawn…
Really? I have not heard that and I’m not so positive there is.

Teen.com: Ok, fine! Can you at least tell us how many shirtless scenes we’ll see you and the wolfpack in?
There’s no way im giving that away! You’ll have to see the movie. But there’s at least one. You see it in the trailer. [Editor's Note: Thanks, Taylor!]

Right, because we weren’t going to see Breaking Dawn already, right? Abduction is in theaters now!
