Taylor Lautner grabbed dinner with Glee star Dianna Agron and two men, who looked like “agent types,” an onlooker tells us. The foursome met at Gjelina in Venice, Calif., and Lautner kept busy chatting with Agron while the men lounged at their table. Lautner was chilled out, while Agron was more animated during their low-key meal. Lautner was also attentive to his fans: he graciously posed with several females who approached his table. Also at the restaurant (dining separately) that night: Neve Campbell and Maria Bello.

His life is a flurry of interviews and photo shoots, but when Taylor Lautner fielded a question about being hit on by two guys during a chat with GQ Australia, a line was crossed.

The magazine’s journalist asked the “Twilight” hunk if openly gay director Gus Van Sant or writer Dustin Lance Black had made any advances towards him during a recent dinner.

Lautner responded, “No, definitely not. I think they know I’m straight. But they’re great guys. They’re a lot of fun. It’s not a coincidence that there was a writer, a director, and an actor at dinner.”

But Mr. Black wasn’t so cool about it. He blogged, “Above and beyond this clear attack on my character, I’m shocked that GQ would allow their writer to lean on the scurrilous, outdated stereotype that gay men are by nature sexual predators. I mean, would you have asked this same question if it were Diablo Cody and Kathryn Bigelow at dinner with Mr. Lautner?”

GQ replied, “We’ve seen some of the comments floating around regarding our recent interview with Taylor Lautner and apologize if anyone was offended by anything in the article. … It certainly wasn’t our intention to paint anyone in the story as a sexual predator.”

“The point we were actually trying to push was that Taylor is irresistible to virtually everyone — regardless of sexuality or gender. Hence the film crew cheering at his shirtless scenes while shooting Twilight, and Mark Wahlberg deeming him better looking than Leonardo DiCaprio.”

There’s Something Taylor Lautner doesn’t want to talk about. He’s biting his nails. He’s having trouble making eye contact. He’s looking down at the table. And then there’s the nervous laughter, the kind that betrays a young man ill at ease.

“Oh boy,” he says.

Lautner is dressed in skinny dark jeans and lived-in black boots. His check flannel shirt is spread wide, revealing what appears to be the 19-year-old actor’s very first crop of chest hair. His smile is Cruise-like, packed with the kind of porcelain that has never been stained by a lick of red wine. Lautner is flashing those teeth, shifting in his chair, because he’s uncomfortable.

We’re sitting down to lunch at L’Ermitage, a swank hotel in Beverly Hills that Lautner likes for its privacy. It’s the kind of place where everyone knows your name, but pretends they’ve never seen your face. He needs that, these days, that kind of protection. Because Twilight’s Jacob Black — the teen wolf — is mobbed wherever he goes.

“It comes down to what kind of mood you’re in,” he says. “You have to make a decision before you go out: are you willing to sign autographs and take pictures, say hello and meet new people?”

Is it upsetting?

“I wouldn’t say I get upset about it. I asked for this,” he says. “It gets frustrating. But during that frustration you say, ‘OK. Why am I frustrated? I’m doing what I love.’ But sometimes you really just want to go do whatever you want to do.”

Losing your anonymity sure pays well. $7.5 million was what Lautner — now officially the highest-paid teenager in Hollywood — made for his current thriller Abduction, about a high-school student who finds his baby photo on a missing-persons website the same night he watches his parents get killed. The film is his first as a leading man and comes without that built-in Team Jacob fan base, but he’s already had a pay rise. He’s expected to earn $10 million for the time-travel film Incarceron, in development now. (Blake Lively, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson have all reportedly met with producers about playing the female lead).

“Abduction” PG-13 — Teen fans of Taylor Lautner’s conflicted werewolf Jacob Black in the teen vampire “Twilight” films (all PG-13s, so far) may want to catch him in this contrived and convoluted thriller. If they pay matinee prices, they won’t feel too shortchanged, and it’s OK fare for most teens.

Lautner’s acting range hasn’t grown much beyond sullen and more sullen, but that works well enough with this story. High-schooler Nathan (Lautner) has always felt like an outsider, alienated from fellow students and even his nice parents Mara (Maria Bello) and Kevin (Jason Isaacs).

He longs for Karen (Lily Collins), the teen beauty across the street, from afar. When they’re assigned to do a research paper together about missing children, Nathan accidentally sees a baby picture of himself on the Internet. Further digging sets off a sudden series of violent events, starting with the murder of the couple he thought were his parents.

Soon Nathan and Karen are on the run, trying to outsmart the killers and decide whether to trust the CIA man (Alfred Molina) who keeps calling them, or Nathan’s longtime therapist (Sigourney Weaver), who is not who he thought she was. The reasons for all this — stolen state secrets — are murky and implausible, but a good excuse for sending a buff teen hero on the run with a pretty girl.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The action features startling but not overly bloody shooting deaths, a number of bone-cracking fights. There is teen drunkenness, occasional mild-to-midrange profanity and mild sexual innuendo and a steamy kiss.
